PACKAGING

Recycling waste packaging is an important part of efforts to reduce the impact of waste on the environment and transition to a circular economy.

Waste packaging is packaging that can no longer be used or has become waste after fulfilling its original purpose. It includes a variety of materials such as plastics, glass, metals, paper and cardboard that can be recycled or processed in other ways.

In 2020, on average, each person in the EU generated 34.6kg of plastic packaging waste, of which 13.0kg was recycled, corresponding to a recycling rate of 38%.

Recycling result

Recycling rates vary between EU member states, with countries such as the Czech Republic, Spain and the Netherlands having rates close to 50%. In 2019, nine EU member states recycled more than half of their plastic packaging waste.

The EU has established rules on packaging and packaging waste, which include recycling targets and requirements for recycled content. These rules are designed to address the growing volumes of packaging waste and to coordinate national measures to manage packaging waste.

MATERIALS THAT CAN BE PROCESSED

  • Primary Packaging

This is the packaging that directly surrounds the product and is intended for the final consumer, such as jars, bottles, and boxes.

  • Secondary Packaging

This type of packaging combines several primary packages, making handling, transportation, and presentation of products easier, such as cartons or shrink wraps.

  • Tertiary Packaging

Crates, boxes, drums, bags, pallets, or other packaging components that surround or hold together multiple basic sales units of goods in retail or bulk packaging, facilitating the handling and transportation of goods and protecting them from damage.
